He married PARNELL PALMER December 01, 1814 in Woodstock, Windsor County, Vermont5, daughter of Ezekiel Palmer and Mary.
Notes
Zenas moved to Hartland & Woodstock, Vermont, around 1795. He purchased land from Alfred Tucker of Hartland, Windsor County, Vermont, on March 11, 1811. (20 acres in the S. W. corner of lot 3, in the 3d range, paying $150.00, and had been living in Hartland at the time. June 2, 1819, he was of Woodstock, Vermont, and sold the above land to Gratia and Martin Billings, both of Hartland. November 25, 1819, he was of Woodstock, Vermont, and sold to James Crooker "one undivided half of the farm on which I now live, which I hold by deed from the same James Crooker, dated December 29, 1817."
Evidently it was soon thereafter he removed to the "far west." A letter written by his sister, Mrs. Parmelia Webster Thomas, dated Woodstock, Vermont, January13,1833, and addressed to Zenas Webster at Edwardsville, Illinois, declares: "Once more I take up my pen to address you, though at so great a distance that it seems almost like addressing the inhabitants of another world. When I realize the land and seas that divide us, and the probability of never again beholding you face to face, my heart dies within me."
The letter continues: "The Indian depredations committed in your section of the country caused us much anxiety as we feared that you were sufferers with others of your own state." After further remarks about reading all the comments of the home papers concerning the assaults the Indians, and expressing a fear that the Almighty is about to come out in judgment against the United States for the abuse of the many blessings which He has bestowed on them, she adds: "We feel, however, a good degree of confidence in the wisdom and skill of our Chief Magistrate . . . I know of no one better qualified than President Jackson. He is a Mason, it is true, and he is also a Republican of the old school--for the latter principle I love and regard him. This you know is our inheritance, and never shall I forget the zeal with which our dear father espoused and advocated the best interests of his country. He was a decided Jackson man. We know not Brother, whether you and your wife, are Jackson men or not; or whether you are Anti-Mason or not; on these points you have remained silent.
June 28, 1871, Parnel, widow of Zenas Webster, in good hand, aged 77, of Pella, Marion County, Iowa, made application for a pension. She alleged that he enlisted at Woodstock, Vermont., where she married him, December 1, 1814, under the name of Parnel Palmer, Rev. Seth Sterling, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, officiating; that her husband, Zenas Webster, died in Madison County, Illinois, near Edwardsville, May 14, 1844. She said she was residing at the time of this application with her son, Hiram Z. Webster, about seven miles North East of Pella. She was identified by Melville M. Palmer, a grandson of Mrs. Webster, aged 30, of Young America, and Chester W. Palmer, a nephew of Mrs. Webster, of Monmouth, both in Warren County, Illinois. Her attorney wrote July 3, 1871, that she had lived until recently with a son-in-law, Geo. W. Holcomb, five miles from Young America, and that both Mr. and Mrs. Holcomb had died within a few months. Report in the Bounty Land case shows that Zenas Webster served in Capt. Burnap's Co., Vt. Vols., from Sep 17, to Nov. 30, 1812. It shows the marriage, December 1, 1814, of Parnel Palmer and Zenas Webster, certified by the Clerk of the town of Woodstock, Vermont.
Zenas Webster settled near Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, where he died May 14, 1844. The family then removed north to Ogle County, thence to Young America, now Kirkwood, Warren County, Illinois, and finally to Pella, Marion County, Iowa.
Zenas served in the War of 1812, Captain Burnap's Company, Col. Jonathan Williams Regiment. (His wife had a pension - Certificate No. 1709.) Source: State of Vermont - Roster of Soldiers in the War of 1812-14, by Herbert T. Johnson, 1933. In 1825 ("History of Audubon and Shelby Counties") Zenas and Parnell (perhaps with a child born by then?) moved to Madison County, Illinois, where he "opened and improved a farm." It may have been the SE Quarter of Section 34, in Township Six, North of Range Eight West. However, it seems that he held the land in common with Orville Paddock. Their son, Hiram, was born there. There is a record of land purchased on 15 July 1834...it seems that Zenas had his land in common with Orville Paddock, and they divided the land equally on the above date. (Will investigate this transaction.) Zenas died near Edwardsville, in Madison County, on May 14, 1844, in his 58th year. The location of his burial site has not been discovered at this writing. Will see if there is a cemetery near the site of his homestead???
On the 1880 Census (Iowa), a brother, William, born in Illinois, age 58, is listed as being a resident of the Hiram Webster household. If he was 58 in 1880, he must have been born about 1822 - in Vermont, before the family came to Illinois. =================================================================
